A one-man play in two acts based on Clarence Darrow for the Defense by Irving Stone, is a reminiscence of the unpopular cases in which the famous attorney was involved, the events of his personal life and his opinions about contemporary events.
The play brings Darrow "back to life" and delves into his life as a lawyer and social justice activist. Darrow is most known for his defense of Leopold and Loeb and John T. Scopes in the Scopes "Monkey" Trial.
Clarence Darrow was an American icon; advocate for the underdog, champion for the little guy, and defender of the damned. Clarence Darrow was an American lawyer and he was among the first attorneys to be called a "labor lawyer."
Clarence Darrow's work in the courtroom impacted the social, political and cultural fabric of the early part of the 20th century. Fighting for labor reform, racial equality, the teaching of evolution in our public schools, and challenging the death penalty were the hallmarks of a brilliant legal career.
Throughout his career, Darrow devoted himself to opposing the death penalty, which he felt to be in conflict with humanitarian progress. In more than 100 cases, Darrow only lost one murder case in Chicago. He became renowned for moving juries and even judges to tears with his eloquence. Darrow had a keen intellect often hidden by his rumpled, unassuming appearance.
