1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 Super Duty Royal Bobcat For Sale in Ardmore, Oklahoma 73401

1962 Pontiac Catalina, Royal Bobcat Super Duty 421. This is it! The most famous S/D of them all. This is the original car featured in the May 1962 issue of Motor Trend Magazine that was modified by Royal Pontiac and driven by Jim Wangers. This S/D retains the original “Traction Master” traction bars and two-bar spinners on the original 8 lug wheels as installed by Royal Pontiac. N.O.S. “Royal Bobcat” emblems adorn the sail panel. The special Royal Bobcat white accent paint has been faithfully reproduced, as well, and is an outstanding compliment to the beautiful and rare Aquamarine color.

This S/D is all original and numbers matching. The original Nos. 3433S and 3435S Carter AFB Carburetors sit atop the original No. 542991 cast aluminum S/D intake manifold. The S/D’s original No. 544306 cylinder heads were rebuilt and ported by respected Pontiac racer, Pete McCarthy. The original high-nickel content S/D block is bored 0.060 and retains its original 990 forged-steel crankshaft. Aluminum Ross pistons increase the compression ratio to approximately 12:1. The intimidating rumble of the McKellar #10 is replicated by a modern Crower No. 60310 camshaft. While originally factory rated at 405 horsepower, and estimated to actually make around 465, this S/D produces more. Open the factory dump plates and you enter pure automotive utopia.

The original Borg Warner 4-speed transmission is connected to the original driveshaft. Correct 4.30 gears spin in the original limited-slip differential. The original Hurst shifter is also retained. Monitoring the engine is a vintage Sun tachometer. This car also features mechanical lifters, dual point ignition and a deepened oil pan.

Numerous and now impossible to find N.O.S. parts (such as the blue tinted steering wheel, tri-color blue upholstery, grills, fuel tank, trim pieces, etc.) were acquired over a twenty year period before a no expense spared body off restoration was completed. All glass is correct and date coded. Correct factory paint daubs were properly applied. This is a concours restoration with riveted ball joints!

The results speak for themselves - Winner Best of Show 2015 Pontiac Oakland Club International Convention among approximately 500 show cars, Good Guys 2009 Muscle Car of the Year finalist and first place in S/D & Prototype class 2007 Pontiac Oakland Club International convention. This S/D was featured in a ten page article in the October 2008 edition of High Performance Pontiac magazine. It is also highlighted in Pontiac Musclecar Performance 1955-1979 by Pete McCarthy on pages 110, 115 and 118. See photos #7 for approval by Pontiac legend Jim Wangers!

Built on December 19, 1961, this was the first S/D hardtop off the line. It is also believed to be the first S/D sold to the public. Only 162 were ever built by the factory for Super Stock and NASCAR racing. It is now estimated that only about 30 remain. Of the remaining cars, only a few retain their original drivetrain. This is rare opportunity to own an even rarer car.

Full documentation includes the original Royal Pontiac bill of sale and window sticker. A copy of the build sheet is also provided. VIN is #362P20980. Stored in a climate controlled environment, this S/D has never been on a drag strip or abused since its restoration. A one of a kind 421 S/D car that has remained with its current owner since 1988. Well known and respected in the Pontiac S/D community, this is a beautiful, one of a kind, no disappointments car. Own a piece of Royal Pontiac History.
